In a sector where performance, aesthetics, and durability must align without compromise, joinery manufacturers are increasingly turning to next-generation materials. MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME (MTX) has emerged as a standout solution for external joinery – combining the flexibility of wood panels with the durability of premium hardwoods or marine plywood.

One company leading this shift is Konic Doors, part of Irish-based Crafted by Kells. Specialising in bespoke external doors for high-end homes, Konic has adopted MTX as a core material, valuing its consistency, stability, and resilience in demanding applications.

A step change in performance

For external doors exposed to the elements, dimensional stability and weather resistance are essential. Traditional materials such as hardwoods or marine-grade plywood can present issues—variations in quality, sustainability concerns, and susceptibility to long-term movement or decay.

MTX addresses these challenges through acetylated wood fibres, achieving Class 1 durability and offering a 50-year guarantee above ground. It resists swelling, delamination, and fungal decay, even in extreme conditions. This stability is key to maintaining a flawless painted finish over time, reducing costly callbacks and maintenance.

“It gives us incredible peace of mind,” says Matthew Grimes, Director at Konic Doors. “We know that when we use MTX, it will stay true to form and stay looking good for years to come.”

In modern fabrication, consistency is crucial. MTX, free from knots or grain irregularities, machines cleanly and accepts a wide range of finishes, making it ideal for CNC machining, spray finishing, and detailed mouldings.

Konic Doors uses MTX extensively in its handcrafted entrance systems for both period and contemporary homes across Ireland and the UK. The company first tested MTX’s endurance back in 2011, manufacturing the world’s first MEDITE TRICOYA EXTREME shopfront—a project that remains defect-free to this day.

“We’ve worked with MEDITE SMARTPLY since the early R&D phase of Tricoya,” adds Declan Grimes, Co-Director at Konic. “That long-term relationship gave us early insight into just how versatile and robust the material would be. To this day, it’s not just a material we use—it’s one we rely on.”

Meeting modern standards

With growing emphasis on sustainability, fabricators are under pressure to select environmentally responsible materials. MTX delivers on this front, using FSC-certified timber and containing no added formaldehyde. The acetylation process is non-toxic, producing a stable material that resists decay without biocidal treatments or tropical hardwoods.

“Sustainability is a growing priority,” says Matthew Grimes. “Customers expect products that deliver more than aesthetics—they want long-term value, energy performance, and environmental responsibility. MTX helps us tick all those boxes.”

Beyond technical performance, MTX offers exceptional versatility for intricate routing, profiling, and jointing—ideal for blending period aesthetics with modern construction. Its ability to hold paint evenly and resist flaking ensures a premium finish that lasts.

“It’s rare to find a product that delivers such consistent machining and finish quality,” notes Declan. “Our installers and specifiers know what to expect every time.”

With its proven performance, durability, and sustainability, MTX is fast becoming the material of choice for external joinery—helping fabricators like Konic meet evolving market demands without compromising on design or quality.
