Finsa opens £20m Birkenhead headquarters

Finsa UK has officially opened its new £20 million logistics headquarters and distribution centre at Grandidges Quay, Birkenhead, reinforcing the wood-based panel specialist’s long-term commitment to the UK market.

Developed in partnership with Peel Ports and located within the Wirral Waters Freeport, the 156,000 sq ft facility brings together warehousing, port handling and commercial operations on a single site.

The development includes a logistics warehouse, a cross-laminated timber (CLT) office building and the Finsa Home commercial space, alongside a dedicated dock and new port crane enabling vessels to be unloaded directly at the site.

The investment is designed to strengthen Finsa’s UK distribution capabilities while securing the long-term future of its operations in Merseyside.

Long-term investment in UK operations

Finsa has operated in the UK since 1978 and has been based in Merseyside since 1990. Finsa UK currently generates annual turnover of approximately £60 million and supplies distributors and manufacturers serving the construction, furniture and interior design sectors.

Commenting on the opening, Finsa said: “This opening marks a decisive milestone for the Finsa Group. Our £20 million investment in Birkenhead reaffirms our long-term commitment to the British market.

Steve Rotheram, Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, said the investment demonstrated the confidence businesses have in the region’s long-term economic prospects.

Significant milestone

Cllr Paula Basnett, Leader of Wirral Council, described the opening as a significant milestone for both Finsa and the borough.

“This £20 million investment is a major vote of confidence in Wirral, safeguarding existing jobs, creating opportunities for future growth and strengthening the important role that Birkenhead Docks plays in our local economy,” she said.

“Located within the Wirral Waters Freeport tax site, this development demonstrates what can be achieved when businesses, local government and regional partners work together to unlock investment and support economic growth.

“Finsa has been part of the Wirral business community for more than 25 years, and it is fantastic to see the company continuing to invest in its future here. This new facility not only strengthens Finsa’s operations but also builds on the momentum we’re seeing across our waterfront, helping to attract further investment and support sustainable growth for years to come.”

Industry partners mark official opening

More than 80 guests attended the opening ceremony, including Steve Rotheram; Alejandro Polanco Mata, Consul General of Spain in Manchester; and Cllr Paula Basnett.

They were joined by representatives from Finsa’s board and management team, Peel Ports, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Wirral Chamber of Commerce and Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, together with UK customers, business partners and contractors involved in the development.

The new headquarters represents one of Finsa UK’s most significant investments in recent years and provides the company with an integrated logistics platform from which to support customers across the UK furniture, joinery, construction and interiors markets.
