PONC modular shelving system

Ponc.design is a collaboration between Brian Tyrrell (Bear Creation) and Knut Klimmek (Klimmek Furniture). The name is derived from the Irish word ponc, meaning “dot”, referencing the starting point of a new design process. Both makers bring extensive experience in bespoke furniture manufacturing, combining complementary approaches to design and production.

Developed in early 2024, the collaboration set out to address a gap in the market for Irish-designed domestic furniture with international potential. The brief focused on creating a freestanding modular system with minimal assembly requirements, supported by a scalable production and distribution model. The resulting PONC modular shelving system was launched in August 2024.

The system is characterised by rounded vertical elements and softly radiused horizontal components, creating a cohesive and tactile form. The open structure of the verticals reduces visual mass and allows for continuous horizontal planes, supporting a clean and adaptable aesthetic. The design references mid-century principles while maintaining a contemporary presence, making it suitable for a wide range of interior applications, including residential, workplace and hospitality settings.

Functionality is central to the system’s design. Storage components and handles are developed in line with universal design principles, ensuring clarity, accessibility and ease of use. The modular format allows for reconfiguration over time, supporting changing user requirements.

The system comprises vertical supports, shelves and integrated storage units. Verticals are spaced at 800mm centres, with shelves adjustable in 125mm increments. Shelving is available in 250mm and 340mm depths, with a range of lengths that allow for overhangs or bridging across structural grid lines. This enables multiple configurations and system widths.

Storage units are designed to sit between shelves and can be repositioned as required. A two-part shelf support fitting enables components to be installed, adjusted or removed with minimal tools. Vertical elements are wall-fixed using adjustable brackets that accommodate uneven surfaces, incorporate cable management space and include height-adjustable feet to address floor level variations.

Sustainability underpins the material and production strategy. Components are manufactured from solid timber and veneered panels sourced from environmentally responsible European suppliers. Finishes are 0% VOC, contributing to improved indoor air quality. The system is designed for durability and longevity, supported by a lifetime guarantee and a refurbishment and buy-back programme.

Timber is sourced from sustainably managed chestnut forests in Asturias, northern Spain, where harvesting, drying and processing are carried out within a localised supply chain. The forests maintain natural biodiversity, avoiding monoculture practices. Natural oil finishes further support repairability and long-term maintenance.

The PONC system is available via an online configurator, enabling users to design bespoke arrangements. The company also works with architects and interior designers, providing CAD blocks and project support. Consultations are available online or at workshops in Rathcoole, Co. Dublin, and Rathnew, Co. Wicklow.
